South Africa FAQs
Q: What is the best time to visit South Africa? A: South Africa is a year-round destination due to its diverse climates. For wildlife safaris, the dry winter months (May to September) are generally considered best, as vegetation is thinner and animals gather around waterholes. For enjoying Cape Town and the Western Cape, the dry summer months (November to March) are ideal. Whale watching is best from June to December, with peak season in September and October.
Q: Is it safe to travel to South Africa? A: South Africa is generally safe for tourists, especially in major tourist areas and on safaris. However, it's important to exercise increased caution due to crime, particularly in urban areas. It's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, avoid displaying valuable items, and research safe transportation options. Many travelers opt for organized tours or private transfers to enhance their safety.
Q: What currency is used in South Africa? A: The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR), symbolized as 'R'. ATMs are widely available in cities and larger towns, and credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops. It's recommended to carry some local currency for smaller purchases, tips, and in more rural areas.
Q: What should I wear in South Africa? A: Due to varying climates and activities, layering is key. For safaris, neutral-colored, lightweight clothing made from natural fabrics (like cotton or linen) is recommended to blend in with the environment and protect from the sun and insects. Comfortable walking shoes are a must. For city exploration and evenings, smart casual attire is suitable. Always pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. A light jacket or fleece is advisable for cooler mornings and evenings, even in summer.
Q: Will there be Wi-Fi access during the trip? A: Most hotels and lodges in South Africa, especially those catering to tourists, offer Wi-Fi access, sometimes included in your stay. Mobile data coverage is generally good in urban areas and along major routes. You can purchase local SIM cards for mobile data if you require constant connectivity. Portable mobile hotspots and eSIMs are also options for travelers.
Q: What about tipping (gratuity) in South Africa? A: Tipping is a common and expected practice in South Africa, as it forms a significant portion of income for many service industry employees.
-
Restaurants and Bars: 10-15% of the bill is standard, depending on the service. Some establishments might add a service charge for larger groups, so check your bill.
-
Safari Guides/Trackers: It's customary to tip guides and trackers on safari. Recommended amounts can vary, but generally, around US15−20perpersonperdayforyourguideandUS10-15 for trackers is a guideline. Many lodges have a communal tip box for general staff.
-
Hotel Staff: Small tips (e.g., R5-10 per bag for porters, R5-10 each time for valets, R5-10 per day for housekeeping) are appreciated for good service.
-
Other Services: It's common to tip petrol attendants, parking attendants, and even car guards a small amount (R5-10).
It's advisable to carry small denominations of South African Rand for tipping purposes. Your local guide or lodge staff can also provide specific recommendations.
